Real-Life Experience: How I Got Locked Out of My Own
WhatsApp
It started with a simple phone call. The man on the other
end said he was from a WhatsApp group called "Friends of Adebayor."
He asked if I was aware of a meeting happening that night. I wasn’t.
He said, "To join, you’ll need a code. I’ll send it
now—just read it back to me, and I’ll add you to the group."
A six-digit code popped up on my screen, straight from WhatsApp.
I read it out to him.
Within seconds, I was logged out of my WhatsApp. Completely
locked out.
Before I could react, the hacker started sending spammy messages
to all my contacts and groups—cryptocurrency scams, 1XBet promotions, and more.
It was embarrassing and could’ve caused serious harm to others, too.
How WhatsApp Hacks Like This Work
This scam is common. Here’s what happened:
That code? It was my WhatsApp verification code. The hacker
was trying to log into my account on a different device. By giving him the
code, I unknowingly gave him the key to take over my account.
5 Ways to Protect Your WhatsApp from Hackers
1. Never Share Your Verification Code
WhatsApp will never ask you for your verification code. No
one else should either—not even friends or family. If someone asks, it’s a
scam.
2. Enable Two-Step Verification
This adds an extra layer of security. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Account >
Two-step verification > Enable. You’ll set a six-digit PIN that only you
know.
3. Be Skeptical of Unexpected Calls or Messages
If someone claims to be from a group or organization you
don’t recognize, pause. Contact someone you trust before taking any action.
4. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately
If you suspect you’ve been hacked, inform your contacts not
to click on any links from you. Then, try recovering your account by
re-verifying your number.
5. Keep Your App Updated
WhatsApp regularly fixes bugs and vulnerabilities. Using the
latest version helps protect against known security flaws.
What to Do If You’ve Already Been Hacked
Immediately try to log back in using your phone number.
When prompted, enter the new verification code sent by
WhatsApp.
If someone else is logged in, this will kick them out.
Enable two-step verification right away.
Notify friends and family to ignore any suspicious messages.
Stay Smart, Stay Safe
WhatsApp is a powerful tool, but it’s only as secure as your
awareness. Scammers are getting more creative every day, but with caution and
the right settings, you can keep your account safe.
Remember: No code, no click, no problem.
